Can you imagine what it would be like to attend, let alone chair, your 70th Washington College Reunion? That's exactly what Nathan Tattar '39, now 91 years-old, volunteered to do this past year. Why does he do it? He loves Washington College and wanted to connect with old classmates and the memories of those great college days once again.
From a young age, Nathan learned the rewards of tenacity and determination. After college, he took a girl named Shirley out on a first date. Even though Nathan barely knew her, he proposed marriage that very day. “You'll let me know when you are ready to say ‘yes,' ” Nathan proclaimed. It seems his tactics worked. Nathan and Shirley were married on Christmas Day, 1945. Nathan and his wife, Shirley now live in Ardmore, PA; they have grown a family over the years to include two children and two grandsons.
Nathan joined the 1st US Calvary in 1942, one of the most famous and decorated combat divisions of the United States Army. Nathan, a 1st Lieutenant responsible for a unit of 14 men, received the bronze star along with his unit for bravery in combat. Making one of the WWII newsreels of the day, Nathan was one of the first men, alongside of General MacArthur, in the invasion of Leyte.
Nathan always treasured his time at Washington College, which he attended on a full scholarship. He continues to give back to the school that gave him so much by volunteering as a Class Reunion Chair.
